Colourful Marrakech
In November 2022, our Marketing Manager Angelica Pothos visited Villa Dar Hasnaa on a mission to discover the best of Marrakech under the glorious winter sun. In this feature we highlight some of the attractions to offer Owners inspiration for your next holiday in Marrakech.
Why Morocco?
Over the years I had seen many travel bloggers posting about the lively markets, beautiful architecture, exciting cuisine, magical desert tours, hiking and mountain treks on offer in Morocco and I was eager to explore some of the wonders Marrakech has in store. In addition, I wanted a winter sun destination that wasn't too far from Europe. With a short three-hour flight, I was transported from a grey and cold day in London to a very pleasant 25°C sunny Marrakech.
What was your favourite aspect about Marrakech?
Marrakech offers a unique mix of old and new in a very vibrant and lively setting. One can explore the markets, palaces and alleyways of the ancient fortified city before moving onto the galleries, bars and restaurants down below in the new town. Marrakech is also known as a city of luxury, thanks to its famous palaces, 5-star restaurants, luxury spas, hammams and charming riads (traditional houses) in the Medina. This majestic city is filled with cultural heritage and activity - never a dull moment. When staying at Dar Hasnaa, waking up every morning to the gorgeous view of the garden and pool can also be one of the day's highlights.
Top tips for Owners visiting Dar Hasnaa?
- Dar Hasnaa is a great Club Home for larger groups and families. You can enjoy breakfast served on the patio overlooking the pool and gardens, and have dinner parties in the large dining room. You can also gather around in one of the many reception areas and enjoy drinks and snacks prepared in-house.
- Make sure you try Saloua's (local host) Moroccan cooking.
- The in-house driver service is excellent. Driving on the roads of Marrakech can get quite hectic and for someone not used to the roads it could be dangerous. The driver at the villa was very flexible and he also acted as a local guide along the way.
- Pack some sports gear. Dar Hasnaa is also an ideal place to relax and do nothing for a week but if you are up for some activity the clay tennis court is sure to tempt you to play a game or two. There's even space for an umpire.
Trip Highlights
- YSL Museum and Jardin Majorelle Gardens - one of the most 'instagrammable' locations in the city.
- La Mamounia Hotel - enjoy dinner in any of the restaurants or have brunch at the Pool Pavilion with access to the pool and stunning gardens.
- Atlas mountain - two-hour mountain hike walking through a traditional Berber village.
- Old Medina market tour - A local tour guide will show you around the ancient walled city giving you background information, a chance to try local delicacies and bargain for local goods and handicrafts.
- Desert tour - Planning ahead for this is recommended as you may need to stay overnight. There is a rocky desert only an hour away from the villa where you can go camel riding and rent quad bikes, and if you are seeking long stretches of sandy desert you will need to travel further out.
- Sunset hour at a rooftop bar in Medina - Kabana, El Fenn and The Pearl are all great options.
