Your Guide to Koh Samui
The Destination
Koh Samui is a small island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, in the Gulf of Thailand. It is at the heart of Thailand's much-adored archipelago, neighboured by the popular islands of Ko Pha-Ngan, home to the infamous Full Moon Party, and the water sports mecca of Ko Tao.
At its core is dense, tropical jungle, with dramatic waterfalls and secret lagoons, while its palm-fringed coastline is wrapped in a ribbon of powder white sand. A coral reef rich in marine life is a haven for swimming; and underwater rock formations and coral gardens are a diving paradise.
Over the years, Koh Samui has cast a spell on millions of visitors who fall in love with the blow-away beauty of the island, which is so easily accessible from the country's capital, Bangkok. Amazingly, its appeal endures in its surprisingly preserved tropical beauty.
Secluded from the rest of the island on its west coast and enclosed by coconut plantations, our hideaway, Baan Metta, can be found in the idyllic area of Lipa Noi.
The Experience
Lipa Noi is one of the most tranquil and beautiful spots on Koh Samui. Largely undeveloped as opposed to its east coast counterparts, it boasts stunning sunsets all year round, waterfalls, coconut plantations and powdery, golden sand. It takes less than two hours to drive around the whole island, so you can explore further afield with relative ease. Here are a few of our favourite spots on Samuiā¦
This 18-hole footgolf course and botanical garden is situated near the Big Buddha and Chaweng and welcomes players of all skill levels. Its diverse holes wind through the jungle and it boasts over 350 tropical plant species, birds, insects and lizards. A round takes 90 minutes and, at the 11th hole, you'll be offered a complimentary soft drink.
Santiburi Golf and Country Club
Experience excellence at Santiburi. As the only 18-hole championship golf course on the island, it offers panoramic views along the northern coastline, at high elevation. Immerse yourself in the beauty of this remarkable course, with well-maintained fairways and impeccable service.
Ang Thong National Marine Park
Just 35km west of Koh Samui, this captivating archipelago comprises 42 stunning islands. From picturesque landscapes to dramatic limestone cliffs, secluded lagoons to pristine beaches, there is a range of tours to choose from. An extraordinary experience amidst the wonder of nature.
The awe-inspiring Big Buddha Temple is located on Ko Phan, a small island off the north-eastern coast. Known locally as 'Wat Phra Yai', this iconic landmark features a magnificent 39ft-tall golden Buddha statue. As one of Koh Samui's top attractions, the temple stands proudly on the rocky island, accessible via a causeway.
This private sculpture park was brought to life by the visionary, Nim Thongsuk. Starting in 1976, he meticulously crafted an array of statues, temples and natural features on his family's land. The serene and ambient garden is adorned with magnificent Buddha sculptures, divine deities, and animals, and you can enjoy the tranquillity of a waterfall and the gentle flow of the stream. Also known as 'Tarnim Magic Garden', this hidden gem awaits in the hills of Baan Saket.
The vibrant Chaweng Night Market is a must-visit. Located in the heart of Chaweng, on the east coast, this bustling market serves up an array of delicious Thai treats, from fresh seafood and meat dishes, to aromatic noodles and rice. There are many bars and live music, providing a lively ambience, open daily from 5pm - midnight.
Embark on an exhilarating 90-minute boat trip to neighbouring Koh Tao, a paradisical island known for its breath-taking coastline and vibrant marine ecosystems. It is renowned as one of Thailand's top destinations for snorkelling and scuba diving. Experience the wonders of Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle, and witness the mesmerising biodiversity of marine life, from schools of pelagic fish to majestic barracudas, giant groupers, and, with luck, a whale shark.
