Discover Jerez: Sherry, Brandy, and Dancing Horses

Bodegas and Royal Andalucian Horses

Jerez is world-renowned for not only its fine horses, but also for its sherry and brandy production. Located approximately one hour from Sotogrande, this city makes a fascinating day out. The name Jerez translates from the Spanish word for sherry, which is apt considering the number of bodegas to be found here. Bodega means 'cellar' in Spanish, but its generic meaning is 'wine manufacturer'. Guided tours of bodegas such as Gonzalez Byass, Sandeman and Pedro Domecq are available, and usually take place on weekdays. You will discover the number of British winemakers who have been established here for centuries, and get chance to sample the various types of wine they produce. For a more family-oriented day, head over to the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian art. Known for its dancing horse shows, visitors get to see where the world-famous Andalucian thoroughbreds get trained to perform their beautiful 'ballet dances' to music. Experience one of the shows which take place twice a week on Tuesdays or Thursdays at noon. Training can be watched on other days of the week.
