Phuket is Thailand's largest island. With its lush, tropical interior, fringed by pristine white sand and turquoise waters, it's also one of Thailand's most beautiful islands. Phuket's most popular beaches are found on its west coast. Travel a further north and you'll come to Layan Beach, a tranquil corner of paradise that has somehow managed to remain virtually unchanged for 20 years. Sheltered by the tiny island of Koh Kala, Layan is a favourite with locals and expats who prefer to sit under one of the shady pine trees bordering the beach, rather than sun loungers. Behind the beach there is a small pier where long-tail boats set off up the river to a lagoon north of Koh Kala.
