Vast, intensely busy and full of remarkable juxtapositions, Bangkok is a fascinating and beautiful place. It is divided in two by the Chao Phraya River, and is known by the locals as the City of Angels: the name is actually an abbreviated version of a list of superlatives that King Rama I bestowed on his new city, making the full version the longest place name in the world.

The History of Bangkok
Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782. In order to unify the loosely organised city-states that made up the country, the Thai people and government officials invited Phra Buddha Yodea Chulaloke to become the first king of the Chakri period, and he became known as King Rama I.
Under attack by the Burmese who had nearly destroyed Ayuthia, King Rama I moved his palace to a more strategic site across the Chao Phraya river and set about on one of his duties, which was promoting Buddhism. Renovating old temples and building new ones, these efforts can still be seen today and enjoyed from the view of your apartment.
What to See and Do in Bangkok
Bangkok itself offers endless activities including ornate shrines and a vibrant street life. The Chao Phraya River includes an extensive network of canals that meander past the opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Emerald Buddha temple.
Bangkok is also a great location from which to explore the rest of Thailand. With the island of Koh Samui in the south only two hours by plane, you have the chance to leave the hustle and bustle of the capital if the mood takes you. Or you can take a ferry to Koh Larn, a picturesque tropical island off the Pattaya coast. An hours flight and you'll find yourself in Chang Mai, Thailand's northern (and significantly more laid back) capital, nestled in forested foothills.
Food and Drink in Bangkok
Thai cuisine places emphasis on lightly prepared dishes using strong aromatic components that often include chilli or spices. Street food vendors serve up irresistible food every day from the simplest of ingredients, and Bangkok's best restaurants are of world-standard quality. Try the mango sticky rice, delicious steamed crab, Pad Si Ew or even just eat handfuls of delicious mangosteens (known as The Queen of Fruit) and find yourself transported to a foodie's heaven.
