The History of Cote d'Azur

This captivating coastline is one of the world's first modern resort areas. Once an unpromising and inhospitable shore that lacked natural harbours, the French Riviera began earning its glamorous reputation when the arrival of a railway bought Europe's aristocracy. Members of the Rothschild family, Queen Victoria and King Edward VII all enjoyed the mild winters and sun drenched summer months here, and celebrities - drawn by the sumptuous hotels and chic surroundings soon followed - all adding their own sense of exclusivity and allure.

The artistic legacy of Picasso, Matisse, Renoir and Chagall, who were enticed by the unique and beautiful light on this coast, adds a cultural richness to the high-end holiday surroundings of the Côte d'Azur.

The restaurant La Colombe d'Or is also full of art, having struck a deal with both Picasso and Matisse that allowed them to pay for food with their work.
