Nestled in the heart of the Alpilles mountain range in Provence, the village of Mollégès attracted the artistic eye of Vincent Van Gogh, who was drawn to paint the beautiful surrounding countryside over and over again. Looking around the gentle and pretty lower slopes of the Alpilles and taking in their more dramatic sisters in the higher ranges, it's easy to see why.

The History of Molleges

Mollégès, although a small village, has a tangible sense of history and has been inhabited since Roman times. The presence of a marsh allowed people of to take advantage of the area for agriculture, and the proximity of the important Roman settlement Glanum (which grew to become Saint-Rémy-de-Provence) and strategic Roman roads contributed to its growth.

Excavations have even found a Roman villa, and while the buildings you see today may be significantly younger than this, they are still attractively historic. Mollégès also has a strong religious heritage, and in the middle ages the Abbey of Sainte-Marie housed 60 nuns known as the Ladies of Mollégès.

Food and Drink in Molleges

Mollégès is set in one of the country's best wine regions, and provides delicious French fine dining - especially in the aforementioned Mas du Capoun. Provençal cuisine, informed by beautiful local produce and the French's famous culinary sophistication, is mouthwatering.

The area around Carpentras is the home of black truffles, which you'll find in omelettes over the winter months, while Marseille is famous for it's bouillabaisse. Whether it's daube, ratatouille, tapenade or nougat, you'll find them all in their best form here, and the aniseed-flavoured liqueur Pastis (which is amber but turns white when water is added) is a classic apéritif of the region.
