The Underwater Nativity

Nativity scenes are everywhere in Italy at Christmas, but one of the most unusual is in Laveno Mombello, where each year a nativity scene is placed under the water of the lake in front of Piazza Caduti del Lavoro in the centre of town. The tradition started by a group of friends in 1979 and now, a week before Christmas Eve, 42 statues are submerged nearly three metres below the surface of the water. On Christmas Eve itself, after the solemn mass that is usually held in the Church of Sant'Ambrogio, the statue of baby Jesus is placed in the lake in an illuminated crib. Spectacular!

Lucine de Luggiono

From 2nd December - 7th January, Leggiuno lights up with magical illuminations and dazzling decorations. The lights are renowned and have become a cherished attraction, known for representing the spirit of Christmas and immersing visitors in the magic of the season. From 2nd December - 25th December, Father Christmas will be in town to meet children, and from 26th December, the Befana will be waiting for you..!

Porto Valtravaglia Market

On 2nd December - 3rd December, the charming village transforms into a winter wonderland. Over 100 exhibitors and vendors line the streets, showcasing crafts, fayre and entertainment. Choirs and the Santa Claus band parade through town, and creative workshops are on offer for children to enjoy. There is also a Christmas tree which links all attractions and is free-of-charge. On the Sunday evening, there is a fantastic firework display over the lake.

Luino Bibliovillage
