Cannes is world-famous for the Cannes Film Festival, held annually in May. However, there is a lot more to Cannes than meets the eye. Up until the early 19th century, Cannes was nothing more than a small agricultural and fishing village. French and foreign aristocrats began building holiday homes in the area at the start of the 1830s and the town hasn't looked back since. Now known as a city of distinction, Cannes attracts the rich and famous from the international circuit, and has become one of the most elegant resorts to visit in the world. There are also miles of lovely sandy beaches along the Golfe de la Napoule and 'La Croisette' in the Rade de Cannes.
