Exotic Animal World (Previously Butterfly World)
Exotic Animal World, located on Route 44 in Klapmuts, South Africa, is a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned exotic pets. Established in November 1996 by zoologist Esther van der Westhuizen and her mother, Matty Pretorius, the sanctuary was initially known as Butterfly World, featuring an enclosed tropical garden with imported exotic butterflies. Over time, it expanded to accommodate a variety of exotic animals, including spiders, snakes, monkeys, meerkats, scorpions, and numerous bird species, all of which were either donated by previous owners or confiscated by local authorities.
Due to changes in international trade during the coronavirus pandemic, the sanctuary ceased importing butterfly pupae and rebranded as Exotic Animal World to reflect its focus on caring for rescued exotic animals. Today, it is home to over 700 animals, serving as ambassadors for their species with the message: "Appreciate, Don't Keep."
Exotic Animal World is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, offering visitors an educational and magical experience. The on-site Café Lemur provides meals, hot drinks, and cakes, with seating that offers views of rescue parrots and ring-tailed lemurs.
